Actress known for 1980s horror and sci-fi roles… can you guess who?

She is a veteran actress with 170 credits to her name in a career spanning five decades.

But the talented star is best known for her work in some of the biggest horror and sci-fi films of the early 1980s.

She married the famous director of three of her top movies and despite being now 81, she has yet to call ‘cut’ on her movie projects.

She starred in a film released earlier this year and has another film currently in post-production.

Now she has been seen on a rare outing with her dog in LA.

Barbeau braved the 90-degree temperatures in Los Angeles to take her dog on a walk this past weekend.

She was famously married to director John Carpenter from 1979 to 1984 and they worked together on three films:  Someone’s Watching Me! (1978), The Fog (1980), and Escape from New York (1981).

The pair first met while making the made-for-television thriller Someone’s Watching Me! 

It also starred Lauren Hutton and David Birney and aired on NBC in November 1978.

After their marriage, Barbeau was again cast by Carpenter in The Fog alongside Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, Janet Leigh and Hal Holbrook. 

The supernatural horror film centered around a ship lured onto the rocks of Antonio Bay and sinking after being enveloped by a mysterious cloud. When the strange fog returns, legend had it, the victims rise from the depths to seek vengeance.

Her final film with Carpenter was the dystopian Escape from New York co-starring  Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes and Harry Dean Stanton.

Barbeau first came to prominence on Broadway as the original Betty Rizzo in iconic musical Grease in the 1970s. She also starred on highly-popular sitcom Maude from 1972 to 1978

She also starred on highly-popular sitcom Maude from 1972 to 1978 as she portrayed Carol Traynor who is the divorced daughter of Maude Findlay (Bea Arthur). 

She went on to star in made-for-TV biopic The Great Houdini (1976),  a fictionalized account of the life of legendary Hungarian-American escape artist and entertainer Harry Houdini.

Barbeau’s other credits include the 1982 big screen releases George A. Romero’s Creepshow written by Stephen King and Swamp Thing written and directed by Wes Craven. 

In 1986, she starred in the Rodney Dangerfield comedy film Back to School.

Barbeau is also an icon in the voice acting world as she portrayed iconic baddie Catwoman in the DC Animated Universe.

More recently she starred as Ruthie in HBO series  Carnivàle which aired from 2003 to 2005 and earlier this year, she starred in the film Oddities written and directed by Tyler Savage 

She married for the second time in 1992, tying the knot with playwright Billy Van Zandt. 

In 1997, she gave birth at almost 52 to the couple’s twin boys William Dalton and Walker Steven.

She and Van Zandt divorced in 2018.
